Work at Home Dangers is meant to get you to focus not to scare you off. I just needed to get your attention so I could prepare you for what you would face when you decide to start a home-based business. When starting an online store, this is especially true.
Starting your home-based business is incredibly exciting, but you can make a lot of mistakes. When looking for the right fit, you will run into a lot of scams. Advertisers will tell you that all you have to do is give them some money and they will do all the work for you and send you a big check.
The product may be excellent, but it still has to be sold, and selling has never been easy. We all want to believe that we can make money by some secret formula that some all-knowing guru can impart to us. Making money still takes work; you have only changed your location when working from home.
When starting an online business, you will often face a lot of negative feedback from friends and relatives. It is easy for them to point out why you can’t succeed, even though they have never tried or stuck with it long enough to get things working.
They may well quote to you the fact that 97% of those who try will fail. The 3% who succeed are the ones who committed to work until they learned enough to be successful. Being successful requires you to invest the time and some money to learn what you need to do.
I have found three myths that hold a person back and three things that will cause a person to fail.
- You will need a lot of money to get an online business going.
- You must be technical to be successful.
- The competition is too high for the product I want to sell.
Believing these three things are the real work at home dangers.
First, money is not a problem when starting a home business.
You can start without money. Even if you decide to acquire all the tools you need to start an online business, it is minimal when compared to the $150,000 I spent to set up my first offline business.
You can start for less with Wealthy Affiliate, but you will eventually need:
- A domain that will cost you $12-$17/per year, (Hostgator is a good source)
- A full-service host at about $6-$12/month, (Hostgator is a good host)
- And an autoresponder that will cost you another $18-$20/month. (Getresponse is great and only $15/month)
So at some point, you will need to invest money, but you can go a long way with what we use to call sweat equity (time). That is very small when you think of what it would cost to start any off-line business.
Secondly, it is not true that you must be technical to have a home business.
A very real work at home danger is not being willing to learn new things.
You will have to learn many new things, but most are not technical. When I built my first website, I had to write code for everything. Thankfully I don’t anymore and have forgotten how. Today we have WordPress, and anyone can learn to build their site. You still have to learn some new things, but there is excellent free training.
As with any new venture, you will have to learn new skills. If you don’t want to learn them and you have a little money, you can always hire them done very cheaply at some place like Fiverr. I advise that you do your first site yourself to learn.
If you are just getting started or have hit a snag, I would recommend WealthyAffiliate for the free training they provide. They will loan a domain name and host it as well as provide instructions on how to build your website and market it. They also offer excellent advanced training if you upgrade. (If you do decide to upgrade I do receive a commission, but I encourage you to use the free service regardless.)
You can learn everything you need to know and have hundreds of other members that are glad to answer any questions you may have. Even though I have had years of business experience, I have found I needed to ask someone else once in a while.
Finally, competition is too high for an online home business.
Competition only means that a lot of other people are making money and that there is a high demand for the product. If others are making money so can you!
If there is no competition, it only means that there are no buyers. You need a product that is in high demand — the way to overcome it is called niche marketing.
Within every market, there are segments. These segments are opportunities for you to market.
Let me give you an example. The online insurance business is highly competitive. It would be impossible for you to compete with large providers. You would have to target a segment such as handicapped drivers. This is called a niche or niche marketing.
Remember competition only means opportunity.
You can have your dream of working from home and making a living for you and your family. You can even have that new car and a fantastic vacation.
There are only three real work at home dangers that can cause your home business to fail.
- You give up. I mentioned before that 97% fail. Most never give success a chance. They see some claim that they can make a $1000 or more a week without any work and when it does not happen they quit.
- You jump from one scam to another. There are many good programs online that you can make great money at, but there are also thousands of scams.
- You don’t take time to learn your trade and are unwilling to get the training you need to succeed online.
These three are the reason I belong to WealthyAffiliate. They have excellent training; you have access to the owners; it is a community of over a million entrepreneurs that are willing and able to give you the support you will need just for the asking.
The other reason is you do not have to spend any money to get started. When you do not know how to do something, it is great to be able to learn how free.
